Learning Spoken English With A Decent Vocabulary
One of the greatest challenges for an English Language Teacher responsible for imparting the training to the students for improving their Spoken English acumen is the minimum vocabulary. The first-timers do not have an even basic level of vocabulary to be able to understand or express in the Language. It becomes even more difficult for the teacher if the Students are a mixed group where some have a certain level of vocabulary, whereas others have the least knowledge of the words. A decent vocabulary of regularly and most commonly used words is essential both for understanding as well expressing, and in a mixed group the first challenge is to bring them to an equal level of vocabulary. The English language teacher has to adapt to several methods for enhancing the vocabulary of the students to a minimum level before actually starting to train them into being able to express in the language. The process could involve letting the students learn the meaning of the words likely to be used in a lesson before actually starting the lesson. The other could be giving a list of most commonly used words with examples of sentences and phrases to enable them to understand the best use of the words. This process could help in a permanent vocabulary.
These methods are used by teaches across the world and need not necessarily be a very effective method in improving the vocabulary. This does not help in improving the spoken ability of the students. The better way could be involving the students in participative conversations. It has been observed that an audio-video combination has a lasting effect. Making the words visible in the form of images and frequent repetition of the words certainly has a lasting effect and the words are better retained. Encouraging the students to start a conversation using these words, even if it may require prompting always helps in taking away their hesitation. This helps in getting familiar with the words and also helps in gaining a better understanding of the use of the word in different situations. Giving instructions to use English for all conversations with their peers can be a great idea. A blend of all these is most likely to increase and imbibe a permanent vocabulary bank. These are the method that can be successfully used in a class of a mixed group of students to improve their understanding of the language. One or all the above processes can be implemented in the class to improve the vocabulary and thus the Spoken English abilities of the entire group. It is imperative that all instructions are primarily given in English and the students are made to understand the instruction. Adequate directions should be given and need be students should be made to ask and answer questions in English, does not matter if they have to be fed with words for doing so. This will be a great method to not only enhance their confidence in speaking but also add to their vocabulary and the right use of the words. Creating imaginary situations and initiating dialogues accordingly, where students need to participate, should be a regular part of the process of training. All said and done, a language will be best learned if the approach is both individuals as well as involves a group. The individual training can be done through individual Apps or Language labs with access to individual systems, with the set of students can be then involved in group activities. One thing that is of utmost importance is patience on part of both the trainee and the trainer. Errors are bound to happen in mastering the Spoken language.
